Portfolio update April 2014
Over the last few months the Portfolio team has been busy working with our charities and at the same time looking out for promising new entrants who might benefit from our unique support package. I am pleased to announce two recent entrants to our portfolio, SAPERE and City Gateway, with highlights from each investment detailed below. We also convened Impetus-PEF’s first ever meeting of charity leaders to discuss the shared opportunities and challenges that are faced across our portfolio.
New investments in 2014
Both new entrants to our portfolio, City Gateway and SAPERE, have very different ways of supporting children and young people and we are excited about working with them.
City Gateway operates in London’s most deprived borough, Tower Hamlets, helping young people in the community to secure long-term employment. It does this by helping them get the skills and qualifications needed for employment and then offering them apprenticeships with over 100 corporate partners in the Canary Wharf area to assist their transition into employment. In addition to £250,000 grant funding, the Impetus-PEF Investment team and pro bono associates will focus its strategic support to help refine City Gateway’s activities for 14- to 24-year-olds.
SAPERE, Society for the Advancement of Philosophical Enquiry and Reflection in Education, aims to improve educational outcomes in the UK by developing children’s thinking skills through engagement in philosophy, using its Philosophy for Children programme. SAPERE has trained over 10,000 teachers in 2,500 schools to use Philosophy for Children with their pupils and throughout the curriculum. Alongside core funding, Impetus-PEF is supporting support SAPERE to refine the focus of its work and to maximise the impact on pupils from low-income backgrounds, enhancing the effectiveness of the programme in UK schools.
Convening our portfolio leaders
In March, we convened the charity leaders from across the portfolio, providing a chance meet and get to know each other for the first time as a combined portfolio. Establishing a common view of the challenges and opportunities which they face is an important facet of the way we can support these leaders to deliver even greater impact. It was the start of a conversation that will continue.
